"Boredom" by Callie Dean

When school lets out for summer, suddenly everything seems possible. The sun is shining, life is no longer ruled by bells, and the city is yours.

Kurt Vonnegut in Second Life on the Radio

RIP Kurt Vonnegut, 1922-2007

If you're familiar with Kurt Vonnegut's work, it's pretty funny (and not terribly surprising) that his last interview was conducted in an online virtual reality called Second Life. It was recorded in August, 2006, and will broadcast next week for the radio show The Infinite Mind. Click here to watch the video.

Consider yourself forewarned: the visual component of this interview is mad boring. Given all the Second Life media hype, I was expecting much more. In theory, Second Life might be really exciting for things like higher education. Yet, I think I'll maintain some Vonnegut-style skepticism of technology--especially given the early signs that Second Life is becoming more regulated and policed (for example, the FBI is apparently keeping an eye on virtual things).

"Tracking" by Jaimita Haskell

One Building, Two High Schools

Starting in middle school, Jaimita Haskell was marked for the "mainstream" track. As a result, she wasn't put in the advanced classes in high school. This practice is called "tracking," and it's common in school districts across the country. Does tracking match ability with instruction level? Or is it a way of setting up only some students for success? In this story for WNYC's Radio Rookies, one student documents the challenges she faced in trying to switch tracks.

"Tracking": Behind the Scenes

"I wanted people to know that speaking up and saying something can possibly change your whole situation. It wasn't like, 'This is what you should do because I did it this way.' It was like, 'I did it this way, so maybe you can find your own way.'"
